    Hi,

Just finishing my first short – 20 minutes DV short. I want to have a pro colour correct it and transfer it to HD/Digibeta/DVD. Had a bunch of questions on getting the best possible quailty image to him.

    Specifics:
    Edited on FCP3,
    1.25 DP G4 MDD, 1 GB Ram, 10.2.8, Radeon 9000, 7000 RPM HDD’s
Will be printing to tape and then transferring to the AVID for color correction and uprez through Sony Hardware etc.
Cannot use EDL only due to a 3rd party motion tracker plugin I used (had to superimpose something over a moving image, and a few other things)
    16 x 9 DVCAM – shot with DSR 500 w/film lenses

    Questions:

    1. How much space on a Hard Drive does 20 minutes take (DV – uncompressed). Right now I have 1x120GB HDD scratch disk with 3-4 hours of footage I imported with “DV compression” and an 80GB system disk (and possible access to a firewire drive if necessary).
    2. If I do recapture my footage “uncompressed” (after using Media Manager) how much better will the image be (res wise) and can my system handle it? – is it worth it?
    3. Will I have to re-do all of the video filter settings and transitions over the “uncompressed” clips – (I don’t think so) – I think I’ll just have to re-render right?
    4. The guy I was talking to said that it would be better for them to do titles and credits on their system. I understand this may be better than “DV” titles and credits. True?
How much time will this take to re-do my titles and credits? (1-2 min credit roll), 3 subtitles, 1 game show flying title).
    5. Can I just have them import a text file for the credits?
    6. Anything else I need to know / be aware of?

This stuff costs a pretty penny, and seems worth it – I just want to make sure I get the best value for money – and be as prepared as possible.

    Thanks for your help.

[Rick Rose] “1. How much space on a Hard Drive does 20 minutes take (DV – uncompressed). Right now I have 1x120GB HDD scratch disk with 3-4 hours of footage I imported with “DV compression” and an 80GB system disk (and possible access to a firewire drive if necessary).”

There is no “DV Uncompressed.” DV is compressed 5:1 by nature and that’s as good as it gets. Uncompressed is 8bit or 10bit SD / HD. If you’re going to try to render your DV timeline up to an uncompressed timeline, be sure to set all the video on vertical line 1. 8bit SD is approx. 20mb/sec.

[Rick Rose] “2. If I do recapture my footage “uncompressed” (after using Media Manager) how much better will the image be (res wise) and can my system handle it? – is it worth it?”

A single System Disk will not handle uncompressed, Firewire 400 will not handle uncompressed. You will require at least a Firewire 800 and preferrably a RAID version like the Big Disk Extreme from LaCie or the G-RAID from G-TECH. Image quality will be the same. Your graphics and renders will be cleaner.

You will also need a capture card or something like the AJA Io to be able to capture uncompressed.

[Rick Rose] “3. Will I have to re-do all of the video filter settings and transitions over the “uncompressed” clips – (I don’t think so) – I think I’ll just have to re-render right?”

If everything lines up correctly, you should just have to re-render.

[Rick Rose] “4. The guy I was talking to said that it would be better for them to do titles and credits on their system. I understand this may be better than “DV” titles and credits. True?”

Uncompressed graphics and titles are always cleaner than DV graphics and titles.

[Rick Rose] “5. Can I just have them import a text file for the credits?”

I usually just copy and paste from a text file when a client bring them in. I usually use Text 3D as my titler of choice.
