  • Finding the folder a clip came from in big project? find bin ala Avid

I know there is a way to do this, but isnt there a button of shortcut to finding the folder that a clip in a sequence came from? Im doing a doc that has a ton of folders and footage and we are going back to old cuts and when Im in the timeline and see footage that is in the area I like but want to search the other shots from the same area, I cant find where it is hidden in all of my folders…in Avid you can select find bin..which will open the bin that the clip came from. How do you do this in FCP? Thks…

    Hi
With the clip selected, or double-clicked into the Viewer, Shift-F.

As long as your sequence isn’t in a separate project from the clip, you can always press SHIFT-F. That is an option in the VIEW menu…REVEAL MASTER FILE.

Another helpful keystroke is “reveal in finder”. This will “match back” your clip all the way back to the finder level. If you practice good media management, and use the finder level folder structure as a way to organize your project, this key stroke is the key to finding anything, anytime, anywhere.

We pass “thin” projects back and forth that just contain a timeline. These projects do not have large folders of media within, so “reveal in finder” enables us to use the entire SAN as one big project. This is NOT something that AVID can do, and in my opinion is a plus for FCP.
