I just shot some footage, and applied various filters, did gamma correction, played with levels, desaturated, added flicker, tint and grain. (trying to achieve a film look).

It took awhile, and when i exported as prores file, the final product looked noticeably different. Essentially, the blacks became lighter.

not sure what to do, or what to change. i’m sure its something in the ‘sequence settings’ – really don’t know. it’s definitely frustrating after hours of editing! lol

any advice would be appreciated, thank you

i’m recording video using Nikon D90.

Sounds like you’re on the right track. Be a little more specific, please. When you say “Exported to ProRes” did you export using compressor? Or using quicktime conversion? What are your sequence settings? Are you using FC7? FC6?

It sounds like a gamma issue, which can be addressed in several places. It differs slightly from FC7 (FCS3) to FC6 (FCS2). There are settings in your export dialog which will affect your gamma levels. I have to have FC open in front of me to remember, but if you lay out your sequnce and project settings, and how you’re exporting it, maybe we can help.

    Cheers,

oh hai! thx for replying D.

I’m importing all my clips as Prores. sequence settings the same, hd 720, square pix,

I’m running a similar mac to yours: MacBook 2.4 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GB ram, Mac OS X 10.5.7 (except, its not a pro, and therefore no advanced graphics card)

i thought that may have been the problem. But it does definitely look like a gamma issue.

But I did try this, and was successful. I exported the prores file from fcp, using animation codec. the result was lossless.

however, i still am having difficulty exportingn to h.264 without losing quality. i have managed using the h.264x codec with some success, but its very unpredictable.

for the most part, its hit and miss for me. looking to get an imac soon, maybe the graphics card is failing me??
