  • Final Cut/After Effects Classes or School

Posted by Jared Smith on November 23, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Hey everyone, I am serious about making a career out of editing but I would like to know more about all of Final Cut’s features. I also have read that After Effects is really important to know as well.

Does anyone know what some good classes or schools there are for this that are worth while in the Philadelphia/New York area to learn more about FCP and After Effects?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My suggestion is to pick a discipline first. Either AE or FCP. They are different tools and require different artistry. Especially if you wish to make a career out of it.

Dont get me wrong, as an editor it is good for me to know AE and I do, but I am an offline editor first and I dont bill myself out as an efx guy.

So find which one you love first by taking some introductory classes and than supplement it with the other.

Look at the Apple website for classes. They will list the Apple certified facilities in your area and than most likely those facilities with teach Adobe stuff as well.

Here is a big one on the West Coast https://www.weynand.com/wt/
they may teach out in your area as well.

    good luck!

    Hey Jared,

I agree to learn one first. There are similarities between editing & animating, but the way to approach them are very different.

    For example…

In editing, content is king. You’ll need to know what the video is about or what footage you have to use. That will be what your edit will be about. Knowing how to craft story is essential here.

In animating, there are thousands of avenues because you can create things from scratch. Sometimes you might storyboard what you want, other times you may jump into AE and just start playing with ideas until things work. Knowing how to design & execute ideas is essential here.

I don’t know about schools, but https://www.lynda.com is an excellent resource for training, as well as real world examples.

Hope all works well for you 🙂
