I have a large upcoming project that is going to require 5.1 surround sound delivery on HDCAM and DVD. We currently do all our HD work with FCP, AJA Kona 2 and LHe boards, etc. Is there a good way to do 5.1 surround sound with FCP or Soundtrack Pro? Or would I be better off finally adding a Pro Tools system to my arsenal? If Pro Tools is the answer, can the LE level product (I’m think Digi003) even handle surround sound or do I have to step up to a Pro Tools HD level product? Finally, once I get a nice surround sound mix somewhere, how do you deliver that on HDCAM? Is each channel a separate audio track on the HDCAM tape?

    Thanks for the help.

I’m looking into this for our studio as well.

I found a great Dolby 5.1 plugin for Pro Tools HD, the same
company sells DTS and DTS-HD plugins as well. All of them
    are just under 1,000 usd.

as for putting surround on HDCAM, its my understanding that
you encode tracks 3 and 4 to Dolby-E where it is recorded
there as data that can be de-coded later.

If your laying back to HDCAM-SR then you just record
the tracks/stems as separate channels (there are 12 available)

What’s the plug-ins you found for Pro Tools HD? I had looked into some called 360, I think made by Wave – but they didn’t work with Pro Tools LE.

I’m definitely not making a decision on anything until after NAB with the hopes that some 5.1 capabilities might pop up in Soundtrack Pro or FCP.

    Thanks.

Pro Tools LE does not have surround sound capabilities- nor does Soundtrack Pro. Logic Pro and Cubase 4 both offer 5.1 audio capabilities and for much less money than purchase of a Pro Tools HD system.

Hopefully at NAB we will see some form of 5.1 processing offered in the next release of FCP or STP…but people have been looking for this for the last three years so I wouldn’t count on it.
