OK, here’s the deal: I’m relatively experienced in Final Cut Pro, but I just purchased Final Cut Studio and I’m new to all the other programs in the bundle. I’m now in the process of shooting a film, which I will be putting together with these programs.

My questions relate to the postproduction workflow: I’m shooting in 4:3 Standard-def DV and cropping the image to a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. So far I’ve just been dropping a black mask over the video in Final Cut and editing as a 4:3 project. Is there a better way to do this? For example, should I rescale the video and edit the project as 16×9 anamorphic? I know I’m not originating on the best-quality format out there; right now I’m mainly concerned with what workflow would produce the best-quality finished product given the source material. Additionally, are there any considerations here in regard to DVD authoring?

I also noticed that Compressor can upconvert SD to HD. I would assume that any improvement in quality would be minor at best, but I could be wrong. Is there any reason to do this other than for authoring an HD-DVD? If I SHOULD be doing this, would it be best to upconvert the source clips individually, or the entire, locked project?

Stay in the original format. You can add a widescreen filter to do your cropping if that would be easier. Upconverting doesn’t improve anything. i.e. you can’t get better than what was shot.
