Final Cut Studio (Universal) & eBay
Hello,
I am seeing great deals on the whole Final Cut Studio 5.1 suite on eBay lately. They are all promoting it as full retail version with serial numbers, just no box or paper documentation. Is this legitimate? Would I be safe to purchase something as described above from someone and trust it will install on my Mac and be future upgradeable? Seems like a great deal–I would obviously check the users “ranking” and “feedback” of the seller before ordering.

Personnaly I never and I never will buy software from eBay. I heard to many stories of people getting screwed.

My guess is someone purchased Motion 2 for $200 upgraded to FCS 5.1 for $200 more and are trying to turn the profit. I recieved my upgrade the other day and all that you get is the 5 install DVDs. I believe selling the ugrade to FCS over ebay would be in violation of the terms of the upgrade but I could be wrong.

That’s someone who did a cross-grade because Apple does not send any documentation or boxes. Also, Apple does NOT send a new serial number with the cross-grade. So you will NOT be purchasing an un-licensed copy of Studio. If that person sends you a serial number, it will NOT be legitimate.

Only the FCP Studio Crossgrade ($49) doesn’t come with serial numbers. All the DVD Studio Pro, FCP 4, Motion, etc upgrades do come with new serial numbers.
Still morally questionable though, especially if they want >$300 for the upgrade Universal version.
