Final Cut Studio 2 running out of memory.
Hello there!
I was wondering if anybody has advice on the following:I’m running Final Cut Studio 2 on the following system: 2 X QUad-Core 2.26 processors, 6 Gig Ram, NVIDA GeForce GT 120 with 3 X HD’s ( two extra for video with 631.19 GB and 931.19 GB of space)
I’m editing my first feature film with Sony XDCAM footage using pro-res (from the EX3) and I’m only about 26 Mins in. There have been two points in the last few days where FCP has given an error message, saying it’s run out of space and prompted me to delete files from the render manager when I’ve been trying to render through the movie.
The first time it was OK, as I had forgotten to ditch the render files from a teaser trailer that I had cut. There’s plenty of space left on both Hard Drives (Both are dedicated to only FCP, and this is the only project I’m working on) and I believe I’ve got my scratch discs set up to optimize performance of FCP.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m a little worried that I’m getting this problem now, when there’s a whole feature film to edit!

Have you added many extra fonts and/or filters and plugins to your system?
Have you trashed preferences lately?

Thanks for your response! I’ve not added many new fonts (3), the only extra plug in I use within FCP is ‘Magic Bullet Looks’ (something that used to give me some render troubles when I used Adobe Premiere) And I’ve only been using this on a few clips (around 7) that were suffering from a faulty lens adapter on our first day filming, I haven’t been using many transitions or filters, mainly color correction and a 2:35:1 matte.I’ve not trashed my preferences yet. I’ve been using this machine for a few weeks, but using FCP pretty constantly.

Actually, your Boris plugins are in that folder, so keep that in mind. Each is labeled “.bundle.”

Bingo!!! I’ll bet that’s the source of your problem.
Shut down FCP. Now, go to Library>>Application Support>>Final Cut Pro System Support>>Plugins and rename the Magic Bullet plugin or move it to another folder temporarily.
Now, go back and test FCP to see if that has fixed the problem.

Hi David,
Many thanks! I will try that now, although, the first time it did this I had not yet installed magic bullet. ( I only put that on yesterday and the second error happened a few hours after)It’s only done this twice, and there’s been a lot of rendering done between each problem – but it made no sense that I was being prompted to dump files from the render manager when I’ve still got a lot of free disc space.

Out of memory or out of disk space? Sounds like your scratch folder or the render folder is set to you apps drive and not your media drives..
