Final Cut Studio 2 backwards compatibility…
Is it possible to open a file altered in Final Cut Studio 2 in 5.1.4? My employees are reluctant to (won’t!) upgrade all the edit suites from 5.1.4, but it would be nice to get Color on the online computer. Of course, we don’t want the problem of should anything ever get sent back to the edit unexpectantly that we can’t work into that project…

No, but the solution for your facility is simple. Make a bootable clone of at least one system drive from one (if not all) of your FCP stations onto a firewire drive before upgrading your stations to FCS2. If ever you have a need to go back to FCP 5, just boot to that firewire drive and edit away.

FCP is not backwards compatible even back from 6.03 to 6.02. However you can export a sequece as an XML and import it back into 5. The best option with FCP 6 is to constantly update to ensure compatibility.

Okay, thanks guys! I think I shall just carry on trying to convince the powers that be that we really should be using the most up to date version of Final Cut on all our systems!

Unless your employees are providing there own computers and software then it is your call as there employer not the employees to make.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
