Final Cut RT options – HELP!
Any idea why when I select a 4:3 aspect ratio under
Sequence > Settings, I lose my RT options?
For instance, with a 3:2 aspect ratio or the HD aspect ratios I have Dynamic,
High, Medium etc as well as Safe and Unlimited – but with a standard 4:3 aspect ratio 640×480 I have no options.
This is so annoying because it needs to render everytime I move ANYTHING!
Any ideas?

Your sequence does not match your media, or your media is a non standard codec that doesn’t work with FCPs rt engine.

Thanks, but this occurs with nothing in the timeline – with a new project.
It seems that different aspect ratios allow me different flexibility with my playback settings.

once you change an aspect ratio, you’ve changed your project settings, so they no longer match your captured media. You really should not be playing with the aspect ratios unless there’s a real reason to. I always leave them default to the format I’m using.

That’s because FCPs rt engine is built around certain codecs and aspect ratios, when you vary off of those FCP does not like to show you real time anymore.

OK, I’m trying to put together my demo reel (not for editing, obviously) so how do I set up a new project with default standard aspect ratio?
The first project we cut on this system was an HD commercial – FCP 5.1.2.
IS there a way to start fresh and then just import clips from other projects?
I have most of my work exported as big fat MOVs.

What you need to do for best results is to convert everything to one frame size, frame rate and codec. Using the advanced format conversion in compressor is great for this. FCP does not handle mixed formats in the timeline very well at all.

As Jeremy says, your footage doesn’t mach your sequence. You must see the setting of your sequence and check that the clips in the brownser got the same specs. Many times FC do not recognice properly these specs and you must set them manually in the brownser columms. If they mach FC will recognice it and you don’t have to render. This happens even this maching is not real i.e. you bring a upper-field clip to a lower-first time-line but you check the clip as lower-first in the brownser. The clip will be readed with the wrong order but without rendering. Up today I think FC works fine with all the QT supported codecs.
