I would say number 1 trash your prefs just to make sure. It never hurts.

Also, have you tried exporting the HDV to quicktime from Final Cut and then using Compressor to compress it to H264? This might be worth a try. If it still crashes at this point there might be a bigger problem with your system and/or probably a Quicktime problem.

I’ve been having the same issue. Such a frustrating day, trying all sorts to make it work: copying clips into new sequences and re-rendering; reconnecting the media; exporting as QuickTime without conversion… nothing worked.

I then tried replacing my PNG caption slides with TIFF versions. Amazingly, it worked.

It feels like a huge victory but is frustrating nonetheless as I’ve wasted half a day. Still, now I know to go with TIFFs over PNGs where possible so hopefully I won’t get the same thing again.

And I hope this helps anyone else who stumbles across this forum post. Let me know if anyone manages to solve the same problem by switching file format for stills.

Yup, it’s PNGs!

I had been using them for a while to create 2.35 crop bars. Something I changed suddenly made this bug appear. It seems to have something to with accidentally having two PNGs overlap each other, or else having them on the topmost video layer. Final Cut would consistently crash and give a useless error report, except once when it finished but rendered a few seconds of the movie with a weird “Predator” infrared type effect.

This is a pretty major bug and I would try reporting it if I thought Apple would ever in a million years listen. We can see their typical attitude right here in this thread, attributing it to random things like “your system” or “prefs” rather than admitting a fairly substantial flaw in Final Cut. Oh well.

I’ve been having the same problem! Though it seems to only crash when I have my settings at best for h.264
How do I change PNG files into Tiff? Is this only for still images? Which my sequence doesn’t have. However I am using neatvideo to remove grain if that has anything to do with PNG or Tiff

Please help me, this has been ruining my whole week.
