Final Cut Pro with Motu v4HD
Posted by Alan Miles on June 15, 2009 at 9:29 amHelp! I’ve recently invested in a Motu V4HD which I have linked to my iMac (3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo OSX 10.5.7) using firewire 800. I have a Sony Z1 camera shooting in HD and a Sony HD Deck. I monitor on a JVC SD Monitor and a plasma tv linked by HDMI. I’m in the UK so PAL is the standard.
However – nothing seems to work other than the audio.
1. No signal to the monitor(s)
2. I can’t capture anything
3. Completely confused by all of the audio/video settings in FCPCan anyone give me a definitive hardware set up chain and settings that I need to make in FCP?

June 15, 2009 at 10:35 amPS The Sony deck is a HVRM15AU but if I connect it to the Motu V4HD via firewire it says ‘Firewire Bandwidth Error’! How do I capture through the V4HD?

June 15, 2009 at 3:48 pmWell, here’s an issue. iMac. Multiple firewire ports, but ONE firewire bus. So if you have the MOTU connected via firewire, you really cannot have anything else connected that way. No external FW drive…because the MOTU has the bus. If you have the drive connected, then try to connect the MOTU…the DRIVE has the bus.
This is why it is always recommended to get professional computers if you intend to use professional gear, like capture devices.
What you would do is connect the camera to the MOTU via HDMI, or Component or SDI (if it has SDI), and then the MOTU to the computer. You aren’t trying to connect the camera AND the MOTU to the computer via firewire are you?

June 15, 2009 at 4:28 pmNot being funny Alan, but there are a dozen different potential problems that could give you a bad day. You bought the MOTU from a reseller, right? Have you called them? Most resellers worthy of the name would handhold you through the process of getting it working… but I have to say using one of these with an iMac isn’t ideal. The FW issue (having only 1 bus and no means of expansion) will bring up a lot of pitfalls…

June 15, 2009 at 6:47 pmThanks Shane.
I think I will invest in a new PowerMac and keep my iMac as a stand alone Logic Studio system for my music.
Out of interest, I have a new macbook pro (2.53 Ghz with 4Gb Ram) How would this fair alongside the V4HD?
Lastly, If I have shot HD footage on my Z1 (1080 50i PAL) what would be the Capture and Sequence settings I should consider in the Audio Visual settings. This is what Im confused about – there seems to be so many options!
Thanks
Alan

June 19, 2009 at 8:21 pmHello everybody. I am a host for the new MOTU V4HD forum. Please drop on by!

Although the iMac does have limitations in terms of busses and CPU power, you do have options as to how it can be used with the V4HD and external FW drives.
Please check out the thread here:

As far as your MacBook Pro goes, that will work fine with the V4HD. Because the MacBook Pro does have a card expansion slot, you can add a separate bus for an external drive, so that gives you a bit more flexibility than what you get with the iMac.
For timeline and capture presets, you can use either “V4HD DVCProHD 1080i50 25fps” or “V4HD DVCProHD 1080i60 25fps”. In this case, the i50 (1440 X 1080) or i60 (1280 X 1080) refers to the raster size.

June 19, 2009 at 9:44 pmHi Dave
That’s the best and most promising reply I’ve had!
Can you please recommend some FW800 expansion cards for the MacBook Pro as I don’t seem to be able to find any at the Apple Store? Is it simply a case of sliding it in and away I go?

You are not the first person to ask this question. Here is a thread with some recommendations regarding e-sata cards and drives:https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/992949#994637

June 24, 2009 at 10:15 amHi Alan,
Your best option would be to connect the V4 to the FW bus and then connect an Esata drive to a Lindy card in the side of your MacBookPro. A Proavio DV Box Mini is small bus powered (plug in the usb cable) and has Esata which is a fast connection. Using the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test we managed 71.1 MB/s Read and 66.1 MB/s write using Seagate Es2 class drives. I hope this is of help,Sacha Hansler
