final cut pro to after effects and back 16:9 question
Hi all first time working with 16:9 had a question hope someone can help me with work flow/settings…I’m trying to go from final cut pro to after effects, then back to FCP for output to DVDSP, however when I import the rendered item from after effects to final cut pro I see a vertical “squish” below is my workflow
Final Output: DVD 16:9/4:3 letter boxed (DVDSP)
1. Captured footage from canon xh a1 shot in hdv format down converted (via camera)
2. Sequence settings in FCP:
Frame Size 720 x 480 NTSC DV 3:2
Pixel Aspect NTSC CCIR 601 DV 720 x 480
Anamorphic checked
Field Dominance Lower (even), Quicktime video settings compressor DV/DVC PRO/NTSC <-----should this be none? 3. Export quicktime from final cut pro 4. Import footage into after effects set up a new comp (settings: NTSC D1 Widescreen Square Pixel, w: 864, h: 486 pix aspect Square pixels 16:9) 5. Render from AE and import footage back to final cut pro. 6. Footage looks squished. When I test render a comp from AE with only motion graphics (with a some perfects circles with NTSC D1 Widescreen setting out of AE and bring it into FCP it seems fine, just when adding video there seems to be a problem. I'm thinking it's the square vs. rect. pixels again, but when I try settings in AE that have any 720 x 480 setting, the ouputted render appears letter box in the timeline of FCP. Is it my export from final cut or my render from after effects, I have no problem going from FCP to DVDSP, it's just going from FCP to AE then back, I need to do this so I can create an open/lower third etc.. What should my settings be for my export from Final Cut? What should my settings be for my render from AE? Any help would be most appreciated. -

Your FCP render settings are correct. You should keep your AE settings as they are, but when you do your final render, use the stretch function in the output module and change it back to 720×480 to keep the anamorphic frame.
Import back into FCP, and make sure that the anamorphic column is checked upon import for that clip (sometimes FCP can’t tell if it’s anamorphic).

Oops, more reading shows me you should set up your AE comp for 853×480 not 864×486 unless you are planning on rendering to an uncompressed timeline in FCP. If you are rendering back to dv, keep it 853×480.

I do not undesrtand why you didn;t open in AE a standard NTSC DV (720×480) Composition.
