    Hi

    i think this is my first post here!

    we are using FCP 5.1.4 and AE either 6.5 or 7, and are finding color differences on material exported from FCP, processed in AE, and then imported back to FCP.

    WE originate with Green Screen DVCPROHD footage, then i export from an editied timeline using animation, best, millions, etc. Our AE artist then knocks out the green and gives me back an Animation file with alpha, also best, millions, etc. However, i am seeing a shifting in the gamma levels as well as some color saturation issues. I think we have covered all our bases with the quality and settings of the FCP exports, so i want to make sure all the variables are set correctly in After Effects, things like color space, color profile conversion, itu color and all those little check boxes and preferences.
    If I am asking for a weighty tome of reply because of complexity, just point me in the right direction for more info

    So FCP is YUV and AE 7 is RGB from the way I understand it.

    So when you go from FCP to AE 7, select the footage and choose interpret footage. At the bottom of the box there is an option that says “Expand ITU-R 601 Luma Levels.” Select that. It should compensate correctly.

    I never really figured out how to do it in AE 6.5 but it had something to do with the levels filter.

    have your artist import your file and render it back out WITHOUT KEYING.
    just simply render it back and import it.
    figure out which settings allow for your workflow to preserve the image as closely as possible.

    This takes whatever is being done during the keying phase out of the equation.

    As painful as it might be, i am glad for the honest answer:

    YUV-RGB differences will drive you n-u-t-s, nuts! There are NO known ways to equate the two color spaces… no known formulas

    We have been trying something called “the sheer codec” by Bit jazz. If i export from FCP using the Sheer 10 bit RGB codec, and have the AE artist render it out the same way (no itu expansion) the stuff comes back pretty close. I do it in QT conversion, 960×720, and setting the RGB translate in the sheer options for

After a lot of experimentation i found that if i export from FCP using the Sheer 10 bit RGB codec, and have the AE artist render it out the same way (no itu expansion) the stuff comes back pretty close. I do it in QT conversion, 960×720, and setting the RGB input range in the sheer options for full range, and leave it alone on the AE side, adn that seems to work the best, although its still not perfect, but its a lot easier to correct.
