I’m looking to get into the field of videography and have some questions. I’ve used both Final Cut and Premiere in the past, but it’s been years.

    1. What NLE is a better product? I will be needing to purchase a computer to go along with it, so it all factors into my decision.

    2. What type of computer would be best? Should I go with a Mac Book Pro for editing vs. a PC desktop vs. iMac?

    3. If I decide to go with the Mac Book Pro, is there a way to record directly from the camcorder to the Mac Book Pro?

(Looking to purchase a high def camcorder – possibly the Canon XH A1)

If you have any other questions, please let me know. Many thanks!

Neither. The one that works best for you is the best NLE. That’s the most honest answer I can give. Avid, Media 100, Premiere, FCP, Quantel, Autodesk, etc…. they all work and they all work well. It’s what you’re looking for that matters.

I have used Avid and Media 100 in the past and I LOVED Media 100 but they were very limited in what they could do in 2001. So I switched to FCP because it was cheap and could support Uncompressed editing. FCP has the largest installed base I believe at over 800,000 registered users so take that for what it’s worth.

For the computer, purchase the most you can afford for what you intend to do with it. Uncompressed HD? Then the Mac Pro tower. DV or DVCPro HD? MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro all work.

Desktops are the fastest machines, especially in terms of render time. Laptops are excellent if mobility is important. iMac is essentially a laptop repurposed as a desktop.

[Gwald79] “3. If I decide to go with the Mac Book Pro, is there a way to record directly from the camcorder to the Mac Book Pro?”

    Via Firewire.

Not a fan of the Canon cameras, I know many folks on here are, but I much prefer Panasonic and Sony to the Canons.
