I came across an older Imac G5 2.0 2.5gig RAM with final cut on board from a relative.
I’m just setting it up to taste and installed two external drives to give it some elbow room.
What can I reasonably expect this mac to do in terms of handling 1 to 2 hours of edited standard definition video???

I’m not expecting Mac Pro performance but would have rather come across a dual G5 2.7. Ram is so cheap now I’d max it out to 8 gigs or so but it’s not the case.

Hope to hear good reviews as I’m seriously looking to separate myself from premiere.

    thnx

G5 iMacs are quite slow compared to the Intel versions. Especially if you’re trying to run the latest FCP 6 on there. Older versions of FCP are slower in their own right anyway.

Be prepared for a lot of rendering, especially with Uncompressed SD and of course you’re limited to just Firewire drives for external media. Long story short, you’re going to get pretty slow performance from FCP and your computer, especially when it comes time to apply any filtering or effects to your end product. Any projects longer than 30 minutes will probably really bog down both the iMac and the drives.

A new iMac would serve you far better if you are working professionally with FCP.

    Thanks Walter

I know enough to have suspected so. But I do appreciate your response for the obvious time and experience you have.

I think for any Pro user a Mac pro is always going to be what we crave. It’s just too much money for me right now.

If you need me I’ll be over in the Adobe section…lol

    Cheers

I ran FCP5+ on my G4 and G5 for several years. FCP6 has hooks into Intel, I’ve been told, and the rumors suggest FCP7 is likely to require both Intel and 10.5+.

You can get some terrific used Macintosh computers from hundreds of dealers and Mac refurb houses. Your local Mac User Group may have several listed on their Web site form folks who have purchased new monsters and no longer need the old G5. You can also find used or refurbed Intels with a little work.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Always be on the lookout at Apple’s online store for the Refurb machines. I have purchased four refurbs now and they have always been great and usually 20% or more off the original price.
