Final Cut pro Locks up
Posted by Kevin Quinn on April 5, 2010 at 2:26 pmI am using final cut pro 2. Everytime I open another program final cuts locks up. The dial keeps spinning. When I am using final cut alone it works fine it just locks when I go to another program and come back to final cut. I have reloaded all the software and after all that still the same problem. I am using a G-5 with a 2.5 dual processor and 1.5 gig of Ram. I have final cut studio 6 loaded into the system and running the leapord operating system. Does anyone have an idea what is happening?
Thank you for the help.

That’s an easy one Kevin, what’s happening is that you have less RAM installed than even “the minimum system requirements” as specified in the Apple manual.
When computer manufacturers list the minimum requirements, they aren’t saying “this is the target to shoot for,” they’re saying this is what it takes to be barely up and running, so shoot higher. 2Gbs is the bare minimum just to run FCP, if you want to run more apps you need 4Gbs, and 6Gbs wouldn’t hurt if you want to run lots of apps.
BTW, if you buy more RAM, it should precisely match what’s already in your machine, which might be tough to find. So, consider buying all new RAM in matched pairs, such as 2 X 2GB RAM, or 4 X 1GB RAM, etc. (there are four slots if needed).

April 10, 2010 at 5:00 pmDavid –
I took your suggestion and purchased new ram. I now have 6 gig of ram. Final cut still locks up. Any other suggestions? I contacted Apple and they said to update the software. I performed the check for updates and the system response is that software is up to date. Short of investing in a new machine, I have no idea what else to try at this time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin.

April 10, 2010 at 5:46 pmSounds like it’s time for you to reinstall the OS and FCP from scratch. Consider cloning your present system drive to a firewire drive using Carbon Copy Cloner first, just in case you forget to protect some file you may need later.

April 13, 2010 at 2:41 pmDavid I did a complete install of all software & OS, However, that was not the problem. I finally figured it out. I am working on a project with over 70 timelines or sequences each one over 10 minutes. It seems that this is too much information for Final Cut Pro. Once I broke down that large project into Several small projects the system ran just fine. The system does run faster with the increased Ram. If you have the minimum ram I would suggest to add more it is worth it. Thanks for the help.
