  • Final Cut Pro is adding interlacing to my progressive footage.

Posted by Mike Edge on March 13, 2009 at 2:11 am

I exported a number of separate video files from After Effects as Quicktimes (DV50 NTSC, Progressive, Best Quality) and they look great when I play them back with Quicktime. However, when I import them into Final Cut Pro to edit together, they suddenly become interlaced even though I’ve adjusted the sequence settings and compressor settings to match my footage. Does anyone know why this is happening?

    Hi Mike,
Make sure that the clips shows as NONE in the Browser.
Sure FC is interpreting them as Lower-first.

    Hi Raphael,

Thanks for your response. They were indeed set to Lower first but changing them to None hasn’t made any difference for some reason.

    Hi Mike,
You need to change the field order to NONE and put the footage again in the sequence.
The changes in the Browser do not affect the footage already in the time-line.
So NONE in your Browser and NONE in your sequence and everything will work.

    Hi Raphael,

I tried doing it in the order you mentioned but it’s not fixing the problem. I’ve gone through all the sequence settings, all the compressor settings, and all the footage settings and the problem is still there. I’m thinking I may just edit the clips together in After Effects.

Well if you haven’t de-interlace your footage in AE before being exported as Progressive, the interlacing still there.

My footage was shot as progressive (DVCPRO HD 720, 30p) and looks great when I play it back in the Quicktime file I exported from After Effects. Final Cut is just doing something to the footage on its own that I can’t figure out.

    Mike,
if everything is Progressine-NONE, and have been rendered as such, it can be no interlacing coming from nowhere.

Thanks for your help, Raphael. I understand how it’s all supposed to work but for some reason it just isn’t.

    Hi Mick,
I Think the problem may be that.
Whatever interlaced material you want to finish as Progressive you must de-interlace. This counts for FC, AE or any other application.

What are the sequence settings? Are you using an interlaced codec in your sequence?
