    Hi,
I am learning FCP at the mo and i’m having a few issues. I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me.
    1) After rendering sequence clips, some of them are left with a green line above them that I understand means render preview. The clip doesn’t play back at full quality but I cant find how to render it properly?

    2) I edit Ex1 footage and import it using xdcam transfer software, Once I’ve finished editing I send it out via compressor and compress it to 422 and burn it on to a normal DVD but the qualty is no where near pro quality?

3)I have recently installed a Blackmagic HD breakout card and use a Samsung LED tv as a preview monitor connected via HDMI. It looks nice but the audio and video are very slightly out of sync? Can this be sorted.

I would greatly appreciate and help

    Thankyou

    Hi Steve,

    To help with 1. and 2. –
Importing via XDCAM Transfer is fine, although there is a plugin to enable you to do it directly inside FCP. Google Sony Log and Transfer plugin.
Try changing your sequence settings (CMD+0) so that Compressor is set to ProRes 422 (i.e. not Compressor the software, compressor the render codec setting).
Then press Option+R to render all. (You may need to make sure everything is ticked/checked under the Sequence > Render All menu to ensure everything in the timeline gets rendered. There should sunsequently be a blue bar to indicate the render status, rather than green.
This will yield better quality renders than rendering to XDCAM and then to ProRes via Compressor as you were introducing an additional stage of particularly destructive compression with XDCAM as the sequence codec.

Use Compressor just to create the DVD version, not the master sequence. You could also try tweaking the bitrate settings for the DVD compression if you’re just using the built-in preset.

    For Number 3. –
Experiment with the Frame Offset number under System Settings (Shift+Q) > Playback Control
I’m guessing you’re monitoring audio via the Mac’s built in output rather than through the Blackmagic card??

    Hope this helps,
    Alex Elkins

    Hi Alex,
Thankyou very much for taking the time to help. I really appreciate it.
I am monitoring the audio via the blackmagic card using the xlr left and right connectors which are plugged in to studio monitoring speakers.
I thought this was the right thing to do?
    Thanks again

    Hi Steve,

[Steve Harris] “I am monitoring the audio via the blackmagic card using the xlr left and right connectors which are plugged in to studio monitoring speakers.”

Ok that sounds correct. I guessed at you monitoring via the Mac output as it would definitely have produced sync issues. Is the sound in sync if you listen on the Samsung? (Does the HDMI signal include the audio??) If it’s in sync on the Samsung it would point to a difference in the time to carry the signal over HDMI vs XLR.
I don’t know the Blackmagic cards well, but is there a sync offset setting or anything in the control panel? Might be worth asking in the Blackmagic forum as other people must have encountered this.

    Good luck,
    Alex Elkins

    Hi Alex,

Yes there is audio coming out of the samsung led monitor when I turn it up and that appears to be in sync. So as you said, there must be a difference in the time it takes the sound to travel.
I will post a thread on blackmagic.

Thanks again for your help, its really kind

    Steve

That narrows it down. Do post your solution here if you find one as it’s bound to help someone in the future.

    Good luck
