I render out a seq in final cut via quicktime movie ( seq settings uncompressed 10bit)When I opened it in final cut I noticed that it was all washed out. I know that quicktime tends to handle gamma weird(1.8 and 2.2) So i tried a few things.. I thought that enabling the “Final Cut Studio color compatibility” might do the trick… sadly it did not. I opened up the movie properties and highlighted the video track and under the transparency drop down I changed it from “none(no dither)” to “composition” and that did the trick!

I tried researching to find out exactly what changing this actually does and why it works..but I couldn’t find anything. I came across a few people who had the color shift when they had the H264 codec but never the uncompressed 10 right out of FCP…

So i guess my over all question is why is it so hard to get what you see in your canvas to match a quicktime mov? I could see if I was compressing a file but it is literally the same exact thing!

Is the solution that i came up with the right one? or is there some setting Im forgetting about inside of FCP. If this is the only way does that mean i have to go into each one of my movies in QT and change these settings?

    christina hi,

this is a well known annoying issue that comes up and stings you more or less frequently depending on your workflows

it seems to be apple related

there are many workarounds and general voodoo on the subject.

this should be somehow obsolete very soon when new OS and new QT and hopefully new FCP will be out.

very improbable that the techs at apple do not know about this

here is an interesting recent thread from another forum

    https://fxguide.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6682

    also,
in the fcp manual look at page 1453-5 in pdf. very useful gamma information

about your solution… i don’t think i heard of that one before. i want to recreate it… sounds interesting..

    what is your source format?

    any filters?

about other settings that might affect it,
did you choose the “render 10 bit material in high precision YUV” option in your sequence settings?

and maybe motion filtering quality to “best” if you did anything to it

    hope this helps

The FCP Canvas is purposely degraded as you are expected to have an external broadcast display. Shane Ross has covered this topic so many times we made a FAQ out of it.

[Hector berrebi] “what is your source format?
    any filters?”

The source footage is an Image seq that is coming out of Fusion(pc) to me (mac)Since we’re delivering in a uncompressed 10bit I requested from comp to give me the aja v210 but when they gave me that the footage had a huge color shift… so I just had them deliver me a “none” and compressed it in AE which seemed to work great! minus all the added steps.

I did add a filter in FCP it was the color corrector.

I know that FCP does that after digging through my manual haha.. But I was experiencing the same problem even when viewing them on a monitor.
