Final Cut Pro Archive Formats?
Hello – former Avid editor-just learning Final Cut Studio 2 on MacPro. I know I can backup my projects for future editing, but I want to create a high quality archive file of my edits. One that I can put in compressor and create various formats in the future, including DVD. Some of my edits are SD and some are HDV. File size is not really an issue. Which format(s) is best?

Make self-contained QT movies of the final edit in the same codec as your timeline. If you want a more versital codec, especially with the HDV export the timeline as ProRes. These files can then be taken into Compressor to make files to fit any need, such as DVD or web videos.

I find PhotoJPEG @ 75% or 100% to be a very good archive codec with smaller file sizes and is cross platform as well. It is built in to Quicktime so there’s no need for special transcoders/plug-ins for it.
Uncompressed is fine if file size is not an issue, but I think you will find that file size will become an issue really quick with uncompressed.
There’s always ProRes which is good.
