Hello! I’ve recently been digitizing old tapes, including Mini-DV. To do this, I was using a few old Macs with an old copy of iMovie (’11 I believe). When I was doing this, the files imported as DV, which was what I wanted, straight out of the camera in the format they were recorded in. However, today I tried to do this using a newer Mac that is running MacOS 10.15 Catalina using Final Cut Pro (10.5.4). While I can capture this footage, they all are imported as .mov instead of .dv as on the older machine/ software. Am I missing a setting, or did something fundamentally change in the course of newer OS upgrades?

P.S. I also tried doing this in the newest version of iMovie compatible with that operating system, but it yielded the same results.

    Thank you for any help/advice

Do you have the “MediaInfo” app? It will tell everything about a video file. I’m wondering if the .MOV file is simply a different container for the older footage still encoded as DCT – the miniDV standard? MediaInfo is a utility every videographer and editor should have; its free or cheap depending.

Hi, It will be a DV codec like before but in a mov container—no need to worry.

I use FCP 10.5.4 and Catalina. First in FCP i create a Project and Library. I then bring my media in. Mini Tapes or VHS tapes. Then I put them on the timeline and transfer them to DVD. I do it this way because I need to edit and soundtrack the footage.

Thank you for your answer! I checked the metadata and I can see that it is indeed still DV. Much appreciated!
