    Hello,
I’m new to FCP and I am some what confused about the “Easy Set Up” notification when you first start FCP for the first time.

I plan to use a Sony HDV 1000U via HDMI to a BlackMagic Intensity Pro Capture Card.

I just don’t quite understand what setting I should use.

The first Selection is “FORMAT” but seems to mean the same thing as “USE”.
Therefore I’m confused in what FCP is asking me.

I would like to import using the highest quality possible. I was then told to edit in Apple ProRe but the drop down lists ProRes, ProRes 422, ProRes (HQ) – Which one do I use?

On the drop down for “FORMAT” – What does that mean? The format I plan to import in? Edit in? Finalize in? – Which one should I use??

Please help I’m very confused right off the top!

I’m used to iMovie where I don’t have to choose anything.

    Thank you.

Format and Rate allow you to limit the selections that will appear in the Use popup. If you set it to HD and 29.97 you’ll get fewer choices in the Format popup.

This selection is used to match the media or format you want to capture. It will also set the specifications for the sequence it creates. These can be changed later, but something has to be set here so FCP has a basis for creating that first sequence setting.

You’re really going to have to read or getting some learning materials on this application. It’s going to be very hard going unless you have some experience if NLEs, and it’s not really possible to help an application just by asking questions on forums.

    All the best,

    Tom

    Johnnie,

I highly recommend that you study the following brief tutorial and follow it religiously — it will show you how to properly begin every new FCP project. It’s not very much different from the Apple manual or their tutorial, it’s just a bit more to the point.
