God bless my one version of Tiger…”

BRILLIANT! Can anyone explain to me why there is a need for multiple versions of an OPERATING SYSTEM? It’s just supposed to operate the computer. But we need three (or is it four) versions of Vista. Anything to help Apple’s share keep growing is good by me. 🙂

You know you’re in trouble when you can’t get past the Menu of Operating Systems versions at the store.

Seriously. My nephew ran out and bought a vista pc the first day it came out. He then tried to install a $40 webcam to show it off. It took an HOUR to get his webcam up and running. Even then it was sluggish. I guess cuz it only came with one gig of Ram.

His observations on the OS? “Why is everything running so slow?”

It took them FIVE YEARS to develop a software that is just as difficult and un-user friendly as it’s previous versions. Also, what’s the need to change things that people know (like the start menu), only to be replaced with a semantic change that is neither more simple or efficient? I really, REALLY wanted to get a copy of Vista because I had hoped that when copying Tiger, M$ would possibly make some significant improvements – you know, the whole “Standing on the shoulders of Giants” thing… Wow, was I wrong.

I wish that Apple could design everything so that all would be nice and simple. Imagine how much we as a human race could accomplish if we weren’t spending so much time trying to convince XP’s WGA check that our pre-installed copy of Windows is legitimate.

I think Butthead said it best. “You’ve gotta have stuff that sucks, to have stuff that’s cool”. Apple is defintely cool.

    God I love Apple.

I’ve always been an Apple user and Final Cut Pro has been a life-saver for me. Almost everything Apple makes just feels *right* and makes sense to me. I’m baffled as to why anyone would ever want to buy a windoze machine: that dismal grey plastic; those cheap components; that terrible interface; all those errors; etc, etc.

I’ve been forced to work on Avid and Windoze boxes for the past few months and I’m going BATTY. The calculator comment made me laugh, because it’s so true.

I don’t care who loves Avid and why, but man I cannot wait to get back to FCP! And, if I can help it, I’ll never touch an Avid again (and never again have to Custom Sift to find something).

To me, Avid is windoze-inspired. It just feels like 1980’s PC to me. FCP is so elegant, as is Tiger. One thing that makes me happy, though, the windoze boxes provide distraction for hackers and viruses, so I don’t have to deal with it.

Final Cut Pro + Final Touch + New Asset Management Software+no More support for Shake+Many disappointed people at NAB last year with Avid coming out with a software only version of Adrenaline = FCP 6 or Better

anyone holding off on purchasing decisions should bear in mind that whilst NAB (April) usually brings a windfall of product announcements, it is often not until IBC (September) when they actually ship.
if you have a need for todays latest and greatest, then go get it now … by the time tomorrows latest and greatest is ready you’ll be able to indulge yourself by dipping into your profits from the interim.

    cheers

Apple has 4 versions of Tiger.

    1. OSX Tiger PowerPC
    2. OSX Tiger Intel
    3. OSX Server Tiger PowerPC
    4. OSX Server Intel

Now is that as bad as the many versions of Vista (Home, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate – each for x86 and 64-bit)? No. But one must be fair about these things. Apple does the same thing, but to a lesser degree.

    1. OSX Tiger PowerPC
    2. OSX Tiger Intel
    3. OSX Server Tiger PowerPC
    4. OSX Server Intel

First, it is OS X Tiger UB and OS X Tiger Server UB It works on both systems yet the updates are for different computers because the application ADlib support is designed for either PowerPC or Intel.

Second, you only named a quarter of the versions of Vista. Those are all the versions that mere mortals like us can afford. There are several server and enterprise versions of Vista (single and mutiple license) that can run up to thousands of dollars for a single license! And it still can’t touch what a certain free operating system can do.

Avid is hardly “Windows inspired,” unless your idea of “windows inspired” is anything that Apple didn’t write and thus doesn’t look like Final Cut, DVD Studio, Soundtrack, or Logic.

In fact, Avid was Mac-only for a long, long time. It was migrated to the PC during the “dark years” of Apple, when the hardware was falling considerably behind Intel for high end application development. The interface was developed on the Mac, and has not substantially changed over the years since it was released – which was, as I recall, around 1988. The only Avid product that was developed solely on the PC, and thus has what some might want to call a “windows inspired” interface is the Avid DS – which was actually developed not by Avid, but by Softimage.

Why is it Avid people are so over-sensitive?

It looks pretty PC-inspired to me, I don’t care what platform you use it on. It’s Ugly and clunky. Elegant, it is not.

But I understand other people like it, and that’s just fine. I use what works for me and don’t buy into the whole coke vs. pepsi thing.

Sorry if I offended you. :O)

I’m hardly an “Avid person.” I was simply stating some historical facts to put your original statement into perspective.
