November 20, 2006 at 5:54 pmI think Walter has unofficially become the beta test project for FT on the new Intel Mac’s.
Walter have you considered going straight back to your “older” more reliable system which worked and allowed you to create a solid “workflow” without losing time, money and manpower?
I personally would never upgrade any project to a new workflow unless it had been tested and proven to work in advance of a “real world” deadline.
What drove you to switch over to the new Intel’s in the first place besides all the marketing hype of how much faster they claim to be?
Sometimes less is more when a pending deadline is looming.

November 20, 2006 at 6:19 pmSo far with the apps most of us use, FCP, AE, PS, etc. there is no speed boost. Either because Adobe is under Rosetta or because FCP… well, noone really knows why there’s not much of a speed boost with FCP.

November 20, 2006 at 6:46 pm[Shane Ross] “Well that’s it…you upgraded. The company where my guy works, the Final Touch bay most likely isn’t running the latest and greatest…so it still works great. I wouldn’t blame Silicon Color for flat out failing you and calling their product unreliable.”
Yeah I upgraded to get ready for the Universal Binary version which is now out, but completely unusable in the DVCPro HD workflow. It was supposed to be out back in September so we were fully updated and ready for the new software. I’ve heard directly from a few other users that 2.7 is “not ready for prime time” as well.
Version 2.6.2 (beta) is not useable here at this time due to the XML issues.
[Shane Ross] “I’ll wager if you use it on a non-intel mac it might work. Or have you tried that and going from the intel to the older mac back to intel not work?”
You’ll lose that wager because the product IS running on a non-Intel mac, the G5 Quad. I moved the projects the very first day from the Intel box to the G5 Quad after 2.7 completely failed. All of the problems I’ve been reporting here and in the Silicon Color forum have all been from the G5 Quad.
Then the new update came out for 2.7, I tried it out immediately and it looked like the XML issues were all resolved. Then I saw that the DVCPro HD renders were completely un-usuable blocky video. So I switched back to the G5 Quad and XML issues continue.
So yes I would call the product un-reliable at this time and would not recommend anyone purchase it until we see what Apple does with the product. As a color corrector, I have not seen anything that matches the speed and performace of the product. As an interface with Final Cut Pro right now, it’s completely un-reliable.
Wait until NAB, let’s see what Apple does with FT and re-evaluate at that time.

Read my response to Shane Ross. I’m running on an older G5 Quad. Intel box went out of the equation.

Long story and cannot be shared in a public forum. NDA’s and all that.
And Intel isn’t the problem, FT UB 2.7 doesn’t work correctly on the Intels. It appears to be FCP 5.1.2 not liking the XML’s from the older 2.6.2 FT software. Given the choice, I’ll go with the latest FCP over the FT anyday. I use FCP a heckuva lot more than FT.

November 20, 2006 at 6:53 pmOK…so the older versions of FT work with older versions of FCP. OK…so for a working model, don’t upgrade from your working system.
The issue being that many people want to or need to upgrade to access the improvements that FCP delivers with 5.1.2. If you don’t need those changes and improvements, don’t upgrade and you will be fine.
But obviously you need those improvements. Otherwise I’d say revert to the working versions and continue with the success you had with them.

Absolutely, that’s what I recommended on the Silicon Color Forum. If you have a working FT system, don’t touch it.
If you don’t own Final Touch right now, my recommendation is don’t purchase it, wait to see what happens with the software. As a Color Correction system, it’s the best software I’ve seen out there. So let Apple do whatever they’re going to do with it and then re-evaluate.
In our case, we’re a post house and will keep up with the FCP updates. Now that Apple owns FT, that will allow that software to keep pace with Final Cut Pro.

November 21, 2006 at 1:37 amI’m waiting on a double quad core machine myself. However before we see any significant jumps in speed we need the software to take advantage of not only the 64 bit architecture but the multiple cores. So first we’ll need the new operating system and then the rest. The only thing I hate about waiting for all of this is by the time its ready for shipping in may or june, I’ll be to busy to upgrade. 🙁
