Final Cut Pro 4.5 Serial Device Control problem
Can anyone shed a little light on this problem:
Final Cut 4.5, Powermac G4 (OSX 10.3.9), Sony UVW-1800 Beta SP Deck….Everything has worked fine for ages, but all of a sudden, the RS-422 Device control preset yields “NO COMMUNICATION” in the Log & Capture, and Edit to tape windows. Cable is fine, Mac Serial port (Griffin G-port) is fine, Deck is fine. The only thing that changed: I upgraded to QT 7.1.3. Is this the culprit, or what?!? Because if it is, i don’t think i can climb back down to QT 6.x very easily…
I trashed the prefs…no result.
Any input would be appreciated!

If you go into the Capture preset, there is a menu to reset your RS-422 port. (you may even see in the summary that the port needs to be reset)

Sorry, I have to ask…. you checked the remote switch on the 1800? Reseated the cables?

John, thanks for your response…I do not see that option anywhere, perhaps because I do not have a digitizer card (Kona, black magic) that supports serial machine control. I just do Firewire DV capture with a JVC SRVS30 deck, but I often have to output to Beta SP, so I need to control the deck. I’ve always just connected the serial cable to the Griffin G-Port on the back, and to the UVW-1800. It used to work fine. But suddenly there is no communication. A guy at SOS-APPL thought it might have been the QT 7.1.3 upgrade. I dunno..

You still need to make sure your device control is set to your G-port and not Firewire. If you have your device control set to rs-422, then the option to reset the port will be there.

I’ll test my 1800 tomorrow and get back to you. I upgraded to 7.1.3 and haven’t used the RS-422 since, but I haven’t heard any grumblings about the QT upgrade either.
Can you test the computer with another deck or the deck with another 422 controller?

DavidThank you David…i do not have another deck with a 422 interface, but I can confirm that, on the same CPU, Pro Tools does control the 1800 just fine, through the G-port and a MOTU Digital Timepiece. It just seems that FCP isn’t seeing the G-port correctly, even though the settings are right, and Gport shows up in the device control settings window correctly.
It’s maddening!!

My RS-422 device control works fine with a UVW-1800 and Quicktime 7.1.3, however my system uses device control via a Kona LH card and not a serial adaptor like you have. If it’s any help, near the bottom of the following linked page is a link to reinstall 6.5 from 7:
