Hi all,
I’m a tv producer/director who loves working on FCP (much more than AVID). There are, however, a couple of small things I wish I could do with FCP.
1. When I import voice over sound I don’t seem to be able to label the clips so they appear on the timeline allowing me to know which voice over is which just by looking at the timeline.
2. Does FCP have a tool which allows me to see at a glance whether or not I’ve used the same shot more than once? AVID does (and has done for years) and when you’re making documentaries of fairly lengthy durations it’s really handy.Regards,

1. Name the clip “VOICEOVER” or “VO” and then some way to indicate the date it was recorded, or what section it is for. Like “ACT 1 TEMP VO_0519” You can then color the clip too…whatever you want. And then designate ONE track in your timeline as VO. This way it is very easy to find.
2. SHOW DUPLICATE FRAMES. IN the SEQUENCE menu, under SETTINGS. TIMELINE OPTIONS tab. Or the quick menu on the lower left of the timeline, triangle icon next to the 4 rectangles. FCP has been doing this for years too.

Thanks a lot for this. I’ll try it out later today when I get in to the office.
I think maybe I misled you a bit with the naming of the v/o track scenario. What I actually am having trouble with is this:
The v/o track is recorded and pulled in to FCP. It’s then laid into a separate track. BUT, often I would like to then split up the v/o sections into things like – John VO, Rhona VO, Russell VO to show the separate bits of the vo that each person has to speak. Now, I don’t always know that when I record the original guide track. So, I’m looking for a way to label the different sections once the guide track is already laid into its individual track on the timeline. Sorry for the confusion.

You can rename a clip in the timeline:
“control” click on the clip to access.

Or … place you whole vo clip in the timeline. Cut it up using the blade or cntrl v then drag the cut up pieces back into your browser and give them a name.
