Project: A feature film with many subtitles…

I’m using “outline text” for my subtitles and the outline-text is behaving strangely in terms of sometimes needing to render and sometimes not needing to render.

For instance, in a 15min sequence I have about 100 subtitles, all playing back real-time without needing to render.. Then after around 15mins into the sequence, any new outline-text subtitle I add it starts randomly wanting me to render them, giving me the orange render bar, forcing me to choose the unlimited render if I want it to play back without stuttering…

Why this inconsistency in outline-text sometimes needing to render and sometimes not? The subtitle styles aren’t changing at all, and aren’t becoming any more complicated… Is there some limit on the amount of subtitles in a sequence?

It also seems to be impacted by me closing and reopening the timeline. Occasionally when I do that, and it gives me the “preparing video for display bar”, suddenly the outline-text that wanted to be rendered appears to not need a render. (my auto-render is off) But it’s very inconsistent…

Any ideas? Or a better way to approach subtitles without needing to render?

I have a 3ghz 8core Intel Mac, with 12gb of RAM, and Final Cut Pro 7.0.2
