Final cut “out of memory” and green drop frames
Hello, I am a swedish editor who has been working for ten years with Avid and decided to move to final cut. So far everything has worked fine until my third final cut project which has been a nightmare since yesterday.
I am cutting a tv program with a multicam setup on FCP 7.0.3. And I am working with the full cut (70 minutes) as one sequence using Apple pro res 422 (HQ) . I have working with this sequence for the past few days without problems. Suddenly tonight it gives me very often windows stating “out of memory” when I am rendering. When I leave the program and reopen it,the rendering works fine but after a while the “out of memory” window appears again.
There are also at some points a lots of drop frames, jittering images and green frames appearing on my monitor, the sound is also sometimes acting strange with disturbance. I have a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 22,4 GHz with 8GB 1066 Mhz DDR3 and I am using a black magic DeckLink HD Extreme 3D version 7.9.4. The footage is on an 6 TB Media raid with 4 TB space available. My internal drive has 330 GB of space available.I did a mistake the other day upgrading the Mac Os X from 10.6.6 to 10.6.7. Could that be the problem? I have a deadline soon so please help me!!

“Out of memory” problem has something to do with plugins that you use. This I can infer from your statement that it happens when you’re rendering. What exactly are you rendering? Unfortunately, from my personal experience I can sadly testify that there are some plugings in FCP that you can’t use in mix with others regardless of your hardware specs.
As to dropped and green frames more info is needed to make correct guess. Anyways, my first suspect in your case is pluging. -

No, I am only rendering either simple dissolves or a quick time text (animation codec) from AE. -
Or very large jpeg or still image in the timeline. Anything pushing 4000×4000 or above gets to be troubling.

I forgot also to say that my final cut keeps crashing down very often!

Forget about animation codec – use ProrRes as your native one everywhere if you started to work with it. Shut down all applications that you don’t need and that might run along with FCP eating up RAM from it. When face “Out of memory” pop-up save your project and reboot the system to flush RAM.
Hmm. Persistent crashing? Second suspect is your server config. Is it tcp-ip, SCSI, or optics? How many clients request same material simultaneously? If you have multiple client do you have server to administer their requests (x san)?
As you can see there are quite a few gaps you need fill in in order for me to come up with plausible explanation.
The best way is to understand what essentially changed lately and could cause negative effects on your project. Sometimes unearthing back-up project is option.

Every time I have encountered this (and that is many times) it has been due to large still frames in the sequence. Make self-contained quick times of those images with any motion tab moves.

Also, non standard frame size ProRes movies can cause weirdness.
Where did your ProRes files originate?

Final cut works better now!
I started to open a new project, copy/pasting only the sequences I needed but I still had problems.
I tried many times to uppgrade to the decklinks latest driver but there was a problem unzipping the
7.9.6 driver FROM: https://www.blackmagic-design.com
But yesterday I noticed that a new driver was added on the page so after installing the 8.0 DRIVER everything worked fine again.
Today I feel like a happy new born editor so once again thanks everybody! -
With the green drop frames I found that it was the Field Dominance of the Pro Res footage and the sequences that caused this problem.
To fix is go to your browser, slide to the right of the window and check the headline “Field Dominance” – then make sure your clips are set to “None”. To change all of them you can select your clips and then change one of them to none and it’ll change all of them. You will also need to do this with your sequences. This stopped the green frames drop for me.
Out of memory was when I used plugin FX or had images larger than 2MB. They also need to be JPEG formats.
