  • FInal Cut OMF Export / Import to ProTools Woe

I have been cutting a project in Final Cut. It has five reels, each
    approximately 10 minutes long.

I did a perfect OMF Export of all five reels for ProTools five weeks
ago. In the interim, we added some SFX and ADR in the Final Cut
environment, which now requires me to do another OMF export.

I did the export for each reel (sequence) and all but Reel 2 worked
    and opened in ProTools.

    ProTools keeps giving this message:

“Could not complete the Import Tracks command because basic_string::append.”

I have tried to export Reel 2 in a number of
ways and none of them are working and the sound mixer is waiting for
    this thing.

Any help would be extremely appreciated!

I’ve never done that, I always exported the OMFs without problem, but you can also to export your audio as .aiff. You will get a bigger file but I think can work.
In this way each of the channels is exported as an .aiff so you can work with them in Protools or any other application. Go to EXPORT> AUDIO TO AIFFs.

Just had this happen on an OMF I delivered to audio post, we found that an error occured while the OMF was being imported into Protools because in FCP there were instances of disabled audio in the sequence. Epecially suspect were instances of disabled audio with a cross fade attached. We remedied the problem by deleting the disabled audio.

We didnt have time to try lots of things so I did not try simply deleting cross fades attached to disabled audio – which may also work if you want to include options for your audio session.

Also, if you have instances of disabled audio in your sequence that you want to keep in for options in audio post you may want to try Automatic Duck’s Pro Export.

    Hope this helps

Don’t export as aif’s. This is no use to an audio post facility that needs an OMFi to get clips with handles. It also locks in offline audio mixes. As a rough guide they are barely worth loading.

Sometimes OMFis have corrupt media. Try doing the OMFi track by track to isolate a potential problem clip. Frankly I have never had a problem creating and loading FCP OMFis since version 3.

Right. No way to add handles.
