Does FCP automatically add contrast to a clip?

All of my clips look naturally low-contrast when I open them in Quicktime player (as low-contrast as i would expect them to be)…

But when I import these files into FCP, they automatically become much noticeably more contrasty. Both in the canvas or just in the viewer.

i’m using fcp 6.0.6 with prores hq, easy setup to prores hq

No. Final Cut Pro was designed to be used with a proper external monitor. You cannot judge the quality of your video in the Canvas or the Viewer.

In QT Preferences set “Allow FC color compatibility” .
This will set the QT Player with the same gamma that you have in the FC Canvas (2.2).
You may also set your screen at Gamma 2.2, but thm your Canvas will look too dark because you will be applying the gamma twice.

    very interesting….
…is it possible to change the gamma in reverse?

By which I mean: Change FCP’s gamma to match Quicktime? the 2.2 FCP gamma feels darker than it should be. Is Quicktime normally in 1.8? Can FCP display in 1.8?
