  • Final Cut HDV Resize Problem

Posted by Matthew Joal on November 17, 2008 at 5:55 pm

I am having a problem and I am not sure how to fix it. I have a Canon XHA1, I caputured my video with HDV 1080i60. I normally export it once I have captured it in Final Cut as a MOV and then do the changes I need to make in After Effects. However, I am wasting too much time rendering by doing it this way. Here is what I need to do:

Resize my Canvas to 395×290 square pixels for a web based FLV.
Put my video in that I just captured in HDV **This is my problem**
Resize it to fit the canvas (I just resiz using wireframe)
    Export it as an FLV

Now here is where I am getting hung up. I resized the sequence canvas to the desired size and that works just fine. However, when I try to put my video in, because the sequence is using square pixels, the video is distored.

In After Effects that doesn’t seem to matter. I can bring in an HDV video clip and resize it on a square pixel canvas and it works just fine. In Final Cut, the video is distorted.

    I am using FCP 6.

    Thank you for your help!

    Matthew,

You change the aspect ratio in the Distort tab. Open the clip in the viewer.

    Have a wonderful day.

Thank you Chris. Is there a way to know exactly what the aspect ratio should be set to so it is the correct proportion? I changed it to be what looks correct, however, I want to make sure it is exact.

Does doing this method of distortion, hurt the quality of the video clip?

Also, is there a way to resize a video clip in proportion and hold it so it doesn’t rotate. If I hold down the Apple Key, it resizes it to proporation but it also allows me to rotate it.

    Thanks for your help!

[Matthew Joal] “Is there a way to know exactly what the aspect ratio should be set to so it is the correct proportion? I changed it to be what looks correct, however, I want to make sure it is exact.

Some common aspects are 33.33 or 12.5, an easy way to get it is hold down the shift key and grab a corner of the clip in the canvas, and drag the edges to fill the screen. Then look in the distort tab and type in whole numbers close to the proper aspect.

Does doing this method of distortion, hurt the quality of the video clip?

Well, it shouldn’t but I’m not so sure about native HDV, which I never use. It’s a great acquisition format but terrible for editing. I use ProRes.

The cursor changes into a rotate tool when you hold it just so, you can correct any rotation in the Motion tab.

    Have a wonderful day.

Thank you! It worked at 33 just fine.

I did some research on the ProRes capture and it looks like I am missing out by not doing that. I checked my capture settings and the sequence preset can be set to ProRes but I can’t set the capture preset to ProRes because it isn’t available.

Do I have to download the plugin for the ProRes? I thought it was supposed to be available in FCP 6.0.1?

Capture to ProRes via firewire is not done like most normal captures, so you’ll need to check out Mr. Poisson’s tutorial at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php.

[Matthew Joal] “Resize my Canvas to 395×290 square pixels for a web based FLV.”
    Your problem is the size.
395 x 290 Square pixels is not 16 x 9. Whatever thing you put on top will look distorted.

    You can choose;
    – 480 x 270
    – 464 x 261
    – 448 x 252
    – 432 x 243
    – ……………….

Thanks everyone. I got it figured out with all your advice! I had the wrong settings on my sequence. I just changed my sequence to the suggested sizes/format and it worked.

    Thanks!
