I’m running the current version of FCP and working in ProRes 422.
I’d like to share my footage with a post-coordinator who wants basic editing capabilities. Final Cut Express sounds like the solution, but FCExpress doesn’t ship with the PR422 codec.

If I install the PR422 codec on the FCExpress machine would it work?
Could I salvage the PR422 codec from my QT components folder and copy it over to the FCExp machine? Is there a stand alone installer?

    Anyone tried this?

    Thanks,

    Tyler

Google ProRes QT Decoder. This will allow you to view Prores files using QuickTime.

You still will not be able to edit pro res in FCE by just installing the codec.

    FCE cannot edit pro res.

Why can you not edit Pro Res in FCE?
And what does the obscure “Hindsight is always 1080p” mean please?

Does anyone have a workaround for editing your Canon 7D footage in FCE?
I cant install FCP on my G5 cos its a PPC version.

I cant buy a new Mac Pro so that i can install FCP: everyone advises not to at the mo as Mac just about to release new machine. (Last time I bought MacBook they release new machine a few days later)

Im stuck and have to get job done this week!
    Any advice gratefully received!

“Why can you not edit Pro Res in FCE?”

Bcause FCE won’t work with pro res. FCE only works with DV or Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)

The following is my signature quote it is at the end of every post I do.

    Hindsight is always 1080p

I think it is important to mention that, though you will have to render every clip, you can in fact drudge through a project using ProRes 422 and FCE. Is it ideal? No. But, if all you have is Final Cut Express 4 and you have to do a project with ProRes 422 footage, it can be done.

This is my unfortunate case. I first read that FCE wouldn’t support ProRes and was majorly stressed. Upgrading was not an option for me.

After looking further into it, I discovered that I could still import the footage edit and export the mov, I just had to sit through the rendering process.

John, do you know if it’s possible to edit ProRes 422 HQ IN STANDARD DEFINITION in Final Cut Express 4? I am about to get the file on hard disk back from Colorlab (MD) of a 16mm 4:3 B/W short film. If I go ahead and render the entire clip (about 17 minutes) will I still keep all of the frames, or will there be compression, and hence, “dropped” frames?

I need to edit for a film match-back from video. Does Final Cut Express output an EDL: CMX 3600?

I know this is a lot of technical stuff, but if you happen to know anything about these questions I would appreciate it.
