I am constantly getting the dropped frames message during playback on my Final cut express HD program. I’ve done all the requirements like: lowering real time audio, changeed RT unlimited to RT Safe. Shrunk the canvas size, lowered resolution, made sure no windows were overlapping, closed all other sequences and windows, and lastly I increased the ram to 1.5 GB. I’m using an imac g5 with Mac OS X 10.4. It’s only during certain clips on my timeline were it just pops up continously. Please help, I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere? Has apple made any updates to this problem?

I would say that this might be because your drives are too full or your clips are too long. Or you may be making the classic mistake of having media on the same drive as the application.

    Try this:

Never captue more than 10 minutes at time.
Never edit footage captured to the boot drive.
Never fill a drive to more than 80% capacity.

    Most problems originate there.

My guess would definitely be a hard drive throughput issue. As David notes, never put your media on the Boot Drive of a system.

Run an external FW 400 or FW 800 drive and you should be good to go. If you are running an external drive, it’s probably either too full or too fragmented.

I have an imac with 250 GB on it, it’s only 1 drive and I’m only using 20 gb of the total space. Do you think I need a secondary drive to put media on? the whole reason I bought this computer was because of the drive space.

Secondary internal or external Media drives are smart, if not essential.

You’ve got heaps of space on your System drive, but you can end up choking it – you’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll run out of space.

Hard drives can perform slower when they are more full, and in addition, even worse when they are fragmented. Add to that the fact that your iMac’s OS resides on it, and may need to be accessed at any time, and all of a sudden you have a three-pronged potential drain on your HD while you are capturing and playing back. This can result in dropped frames. These can be painful when playing back, but even worse when you need to abort a capture and start it again.

In short – you can work in DV from your system drive, but it isn’t recommended. If at all possible, use a different drive for your media.

Absolutely. You never want to run your media on the System Drive. It will work ok for a while, but before you know it, you’ll have dropped frames and overall problems with your system.

You have one drive that’s running the OS, running the Application and capturing / storing your media. So as you write and delete media, your drive gets incredibly fragemented and you will lose performance much quicker off a single drive than if you had a media drive.

Single FW 400 drives are not that expensive and they will work fine for DV.
