    Hi Guys,

I’m just throwing this out there.

I’m helping out a charity working with video from regions of conflict in the world, that is then donated to schools to develop their awareness of the region and social issues etc, whilst they edit their stories.

In order to make this program as user friendly and accessible as possible, we have been developing manuals/workflows specific to the project based on the software they are using. I have found a roadblock whereby I want to support Final Cut Express 4, but I don’t have access to it. I have already written the workflows for FCP 5 and FCP 6.

My hope is that someone has a copy that they no longer use (what would be the odds of that…) or does FCE import and export media the same way as FCP and does it use the same HDV 1080i60 codec?? The manuals have screenshots of things like Easy Setup, Relinking media, scratch disk setup. Do these look the same??

Any help would of course be appreciated. Also the charity can be found at https://take2videos.org/ if your interested.

    Cheers,

The workflow for HDV is somewhat different as FCE does not edit HDV natively; it transcodes it to the Apple Intermediate Codec on capture. The capture function in HDV in FCE is also very limited as there is no timecode and no logging function.

    All the best,

    Tom,

    Thanks for the quick response.

We send schools files capture in FCP using the HDV 1080i60 codec. (So despite the limited capturing ability, no capturing will be required, just importing). Given what you are telling me, can FCE even read this codec?? Furthermore, If it can read this codec, does it transcode the files to AIC?

    Thanks again,

No, it cannot. The native HDV codec is only available in FCP. What you can do is capture the material in FCP using the Apple Intermediate Codec. That would work. Or batch convert it using Compressor.

    All the best,
