I am trying to capture video with FCX, digitizing using a dazzle from a hi8 camera. In FCP, it’s easy because it’s a noncontrolable device, but right now all I have in FCX, which does not have this variable to change.

How do you capture from analog with FCX?

A good method is to copy any analog source to a DV tape first, then capture the DV tape.

A Two Pass system is the only way to go. I’m trying to help this guy upgrade from iMovie, which doesn’t require anything complex. Is FCX stupid or something?

    In a way…

It is a very simplified version of FCP. Not nearly as many options. And it is designed to work with DV material ONLY. NO analogue input, and only a controllable DV camera. It does not have the uncontrollable device option that FCP has.

I am using a $300 Canopus ADVC-100 analog/DV converter bridge to accomplish exactly what you want to do. Final Cut Express sees it as a deck and will digitize from it.

One caveat: the first time you stop capturing is the last time, because the next time you try to hit capture FCE detects a time code problem. So you have to close FCE and then re-open it … rinse and repeat.

No, it’s not convenient, but hey, it’s cheaper than replacing editing SVHS decks with DV decks and replacing FCE with FCP, so give it a shot.
