    Hi Group

I am very new to non limear video editing. As a matter of urgency I need to purchase an Apple Laptop and software for video editing.

I work as a freelance video editor on a linear DVCPRO 25Mb machine. The company I work for will be in the next few months be switching over to Apple Studio and I need a portable video editing system that is compatiable.

What I need to know is Final Cut Express good enough to be able to edit news inserts on the road. I am not looking for a huge complicated setup yet!

    Thanks

It doesn’t display timecode, though the TC information in embedded in the captured file and will appear in FCP. If that’s not a problem for you, then it’s an excellent editor for news. It doesn’t have the color corrector 3-way, just the basic color corrector. It doesn’t have media manager, which some cynics might say is no great loss. t does not have batch export, and it doesn’t have logging capabilities, you can capture single clips or capture directly. Many people just capture large chunks of video and break it up with DV Start/Stop Detect, though for news you might not even want to do that. It has all the same keyboard shortcuts as FCP. If you’re comfortable with FCE, you’ll be working with FCP in ten minutes. You can open an FCE project in FCP, but usually not vice versa.

    All the best,

Hi What I would like to know if FCE will allow me to import a clip into the timelime and shorting the timeline and the 2 audio tracks, left and right together.

What I am looking for is, I have on minidv tape all the inserts I have editied with the presenter voice on one track and interviews and natural sound on the other track, will FCE import onto the timelime the 2 tracks as seperate tracks allowing me to adjust each track independently?

    Thanks
    Justin

Yes to all of that. It’s editing functions are identical to FCP.

    All the best,
