  • Final Cut Events: Effect Browser Thumbnails- change location

I’ve tried trashing the FCP X prefs, but I can’t seem to find a way to have the “Final Cut Events: Effect Browser Thumbnails” folder NOT get created on my startup drive within the Movies folder. I’m using .sparseimage for the Events and Projects folders, but FCP X won’t seem to create this Thumbnails folder on the disk image drive. Am I missing a pref somewhere in FCP X it set this location? I’d rather it didn’t create this rogue Events folder on the internal drive.

(By the way, I do have an external FW800 RAID 1 setup that I use most of the time, but I’m using the .sparseimage disk image on the internal drive for when I want to do a quick FCP X test without attaching the external drive. This works well in the sense that when I do attach the external drive with the Disk Image ejected, only the external drive Events and Projects show up.)

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Dave,

FCP X puts assets in some very specific places so that all the elements in the database can find them when they need to.

That “Thumbnails” file is NOT trivial to FCP-X.

As I understand things, they are called by a LOT of the code to display clip pictures in the interface.

So as with much else in X, moving it them via the finder is an excellent way to make sure that your program starts to screw up.

Bottom line, FCP-X is NOT like FCP-Legacy. Until you understand how it works, it’s best to leave things in the places where the program puts them.

    FWIW.

    Bill,

[Bill Davis] “So as with much else in X, moving it them via the finder is an excellent way to make sure that your program starts to screw up.”

Okay, I’m starting to get that now, but I was originally just following Apple’s suggestion of hiding Events and Projects via the Finder-
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4740

I played around a bit more with it last night and whether I use an external drive or a .sparseimage, FCP X still wants the “Final Cut Events: Effect Browser Thumbnails” folder on the start-up drive Movies folder. (I wonder if this functionality is built into the program.)

On the bright side, it doesn’t look like this folder gets very big, so I guess I can somewhat permanently ignore it. And, if I’m using my external drive, without an actual Event within the Movies folder, it doesn’t show up in the Event browser. I was just worried that this might yet another thing to add to my long list of general OS maintenance chores.

    Thanks,
    Dave

I believe you are catching on to the new “gestalt” of FCP-X.

    Welcome to the game.

It’s occasionally annoying, but it’s also kinda fun to stretch ones thinking into new areas.

    Enjoy the ride.

    Bill,

this thread is years old but I can’t help but find a better example of why things are so confusing with this awful program. Please allow me to use your response as an example.

FCP X puts assets in some very specific places so that all the elements in the database can find them when they need to.

That “Thumbnails” file is NOT trivial to FCP-X.

All this is fine and dandy, but how about Apple TELLING US what is important so we know what we should not be messing with!

Bottom line, FCP-X is NOT like FCP-Legacy. Until you understand how it works, it’s best to leave things in the places where the program puts them.

Again, fine and dandy, but why isn’t there a simple written explanation TELLING US how it works so we know what the heck we’re doing!?!?!?! The manual simply does not go over these basic explanations
