Final Cut Codecs for Quicktime on PC
Hello! I work for a video production company, and keep running across this same problem. We are an AVID house, but are receiving more and more requests to convert a client’s Final Cut show out to video, in this case Digital Betacam. For files like commercials, we know that we can take the “None” codec (NOT “Uncompressed”) from Final Cut successfully, but the current project is 60+ minutes, leading to a file too gargantuan to fool with.
The client used “DVCPro-50/NTSC” (paraphrased), but none of my PC versions of Quicktime recognize it. My Mac desktop Quicktime Pro does recognize it, and will play it, which tells me the Codecs exist for Quicktime, but are not included on the PC. Any input on where to get these Codecs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! chris

Use ProRes. Apple has a free ProRes decoder for Windows on their site athttps://support.apple.com/downloads/Apple_ProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_for_Windows.

Thanks David! I’ve downloaded it, but when I try to run it, the installer says “you already have a later version of ProRes installed on your system…” Ermmmm. I checked, and there doesn’t seem to be a “later” version of ProRes for Windows. I’ll keep whacking at it! Thanks! chris

Sounds like someone already installed it. Try exporting a short clip in FCP as ProRes and move it to the Windows machine and see if you can open it all apps. I can open ProRes files in all Adobe apps on Windows here.

Sorry, we don’t have a Final Cut system of our own. Is ProRes an output Codec itself? Thanks! chris

Like was mentioned the thread below about taking FCP DVCProHD to an Avid, have anyone who wants to send you a file from FCP export to an Avid codec. The codecs are free, easily downloaded, are available for PC and Mac, and will give you a fast import into your Avid.
If the FCP people want to give you DV50 files, have them use the Avid DV codec and check the DV50 option, interlaced or progressive. If they have DVCProHD have them export to DV100 or the flavor of DNxHD you guys prefer. If it’s standard DV material, have them export to the AvidDV codec and choose the DV25 option (or DV50 to save their graphics undue compression).
Otherwise, like David said, have them export to ProRes, but be sure to allow enough time for the long import as Avid converts it to MXF/OMF. Hence my suggestion to use Avid codecs–much faster import on your end.

Okay, we’ve attempted to do this on our intern’s FCP system. The Avid codecs installed into the Quicktime plug-ins, but they don’t appear when trying to export inside FCP. We see all the other codecs, but not the new Avid ones. Was there another step that we’ve missed? We’re going back to the Avid site for more info. Thanks! chris
