I have a 15″ powerbook 1.25 with 1ghz of RAM running 10.4.9 and Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. Every time I try to capture to my powerbook it won’t capture for more than a minute or so without acting like the timecode has broken.

I know it’s not the camera because it captures fine on other computers. The firewire works fine on my other computer as well.

Does anybody know what’s going on with this thing?

It’s likely that you’re problem stems from either trying to capture directly to your startup disk in the laptop, or you are sharing the same firewire bus with a drive and your camera. The fix is usually to setup another FW bus by buying a PCI card for the purpose.

thanks for the quick reply! Do you have any idea of what might be a good one to look into?

I’m enamored with eSATA setups… they cost about the same as firewire drives, but are a lot faster. Cal Digit, Weibetech, and G-Tech all make them. If you go for the eSata, you’ll need a PCI card to add the port to your laptop. But you should probably add a card too if you go with a FireWire external drive so that the bus isn’t shared with the camera/deck and the drive.

If you google eSATA adapter, you’ll find what you need. Cal Digit and Weibetech both sell the adapters I think.
