  • Final Cut as Playback for HVX

Wondering if there is a way to make this work….

Shooting 720 24pN on HVX, Composite out to AJA HD10A, HD-SDI to monitors AND AJA 10MD3 (downconverter), composite out of second AJA to DSR-11, firewire out of DSR-11 to FCP 5.1 ….

looks good on paper, but cant get it to work. any ideas? alternatives? Oh, and the big question… Why? trying to set up a inexpensive (i.e. already own it) playback system which doesnt have to be perfect… it is for playback on set only and DP refuses to shoot 24p over 60 so I have no firewire coming from camera…. so I cant use one of my favorites…. DV RACK 2.0 with DVCProHD support!!

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas!!

    ?What?

You are running composite out and up-converting that to HD SDI to monitor and a downcoverter (can’t see why you’d do that as composite is already SD). Then you are running composite out to a DSR-11 and then trying to digitize that composite signal through your DSR-11?

There’s a lot of thing wrong with that setup. Please explain in further detail.

    Thanks for respondng Jeremy…

Here is some more info: ( I am always looking for suggestions to streamline… so feel free!)

My understanding is that the composite out of the HVX is HD not SD. We turn it into HD-SDI for the hi end monitors that have no analog inputs. Then we have to go to NTSC for the reference monitors for script and playback. Normally we hire a playback person and rent his $20K rig, but this particular job is a passion project and they have no money (wooing a potential up and commer). Thats why I wanted to see if I could rig up some sort of playback using FCP.

And I did! Borrowed a Canopus ADV box from a buddy and its all working great now! Use capture now, then can playback clips on demand. And didnt have to buy any equipment. Obviously wouldnt use FCP as the only capture, but for playback reference, its good enough!

there is not a way composite video that can be an HD signal.

The Component out of the HVX can be set to do 1080, 720 or 480 video out from any of the formats the camera can shoot( yes that does mean you can up, down and cross convert our of the component port.

I recommend that your send Component out as HD and then use either the YC or Composite connections (all 3 are live on the camera) for the SD feed.

Thanks Gary for responding.. I see your name on here often, and always helpful advice!

What a great suggestion too… I had it in my head that when shooting 720 24pN that all the other outputs were cut off.. I guess it is just the Firewire? Thats great.. now I can return my buddys Canopus.

    Thanks again…

Got ya. Big difference between component and composite. Glad you got it working. The Component will send out 720p24 in a 60p stream. It does not get cut off like firewire. Good luck.

    first, thanks for the compliment,

You have to remember that the PN modes are not “true” video according to the SMPTE standards, they only exist in a computer, because the video stream for HD delivery is 60 frames or 60 fields. you cannot pass the PN mode out of the digital port. The analog pots (cmpt Y/C and cpst) are always adding back in the pulldown to meet the SMPTE spec.
