final cut and mpegs
Posted by Nigel Askew on October 13, 2009 at 12:40 pmHi, we tried searching but couldn’t find any previous posts
Just wondering if and how well the new final cut handles mpegs, if at all.
Thanks

October 13, 2009 at 1:38 pmIt doesn’t. MPEG is a delivery format. Normally the material is converted to QuickTime using a production codec, depending on what you started with and where you’re going and what you need to do in between.
All the best,
Tom

October 13, 2009 at 3:40 pmThere is a way to edit mp4 in FCP by purchasing one of the Calibrated Software plug-ins <https://www.calibratedsoftware.com/>, but if you are talking about mpg2, then use Cinematize to convert to a Quicktime.

October 13, 2009 at 7:13 pmHey
Just curious. The software you recommend to convert to quicktime does it make especially good conversions ? I ask because i use a free converter mpeg streamclip https://www.squared5.com/ which seems to do a good job.
Alway curious though so why that converter ?
Best wishes

October 14, 2009 at 2:06 amThe editability (?) of the MPGs in FC will depends very much of the kind on MPGE.
XDCAM and HDV are MPEG-2 and fully supported in FC.
Other kinds of mpgs will depends of the flavor, the extension, the audio..
Mpgs with MP2 audio, will show the picture but not sound.
So you never know until you put your mpgs in the time line.
Some will work great, some may crash FC.
