Finally, Apple released the new version of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut 7.

They have a new plugin support for XDCam XDCamEX. Compressor burns to BluRay, but sadly, no BluRay Authoring in their DVD authoring software.

They did include native AVHCD editing support. Hopefully this means flexibility in not making everyone stick to the Pro-Res. Maybe they will include an update later for the native XDCAM editing.

Faster render times, better timeline controls, updated ProRes condecs.

We’ve been waiting for this update, in what seems years. I understand the iPod / iPhone money machine has put us on the backburner. I hope updates to this software will finally fix the BluRay headache.

No they didn’t Brent, they introduced native support for the professional AVC Intra codec, not consumer AVCHD

Thats already native. You just need to rewrap to quicktime, there’s no transcode. If you like you can even edit the raw MXF recording files through third party support though its not ideal.

There’s a long thread on FCS and FCP 7 just a few posts below this

ahhh, I missread. I was hoping and surprised. I thought Apple must be melting away their “My Way or No Way” format.

Yeah, I don’t have a problem converting my XDCam files to ProRes, but it would be nice to skip this re-wrapping step. I’m always looking for a faster way, minutes turn into hours.

FYI, they are two completely separate processes. The process of rewrapping to QT (whether you use FCP’s Log and Transfer or Sony’s XDCAM Transfer) doesn’t transcode clips to ProRes, it merely makes the mp4 files into Quicktime files than FCP can import. The rewrapped Quicktimes still use the XDCAM EX codec.

Transcoding to ProRes is a completely separate (and optional) process. Apple doesn’t force anyone to use ProRes.

The Log and Transfer in FCP 7 is much faster for XDCAM and P2 than FCP 6. It is almost instant as soon as you insert a P2 card, S x S card, SD Card or hard drive containing the files.
