  • Filming in HD for eventual DVD?

I want to buy one of those cheap Flip Camcorders to keep around in my backpack ready to whip out at any time to grab some valuable footage. I’d prefer to film it in HD for a high quality export to the internet.

However, I’d like to also someday compile this HD footage, and create a standard definition DVD with it.

Can someone tell me the process for this? Is it OK to film in HD if I eventually export to SD DVD?

The HD would probably be in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. Can I import that into the Premiere timeline and edit it easily? Or are there some complicated conversions involved?

I’ve just never worked with HD before, and want to get it right from the start.

It’s fine. If you have Premiere, I would assume you have Encore. You can bring 16:9 footage in and burn it to DVD while keeping that aspect ratio (this is known as an anamorphic DVD which will play in full on a 16:9 tv or with shadow bars on a 4:3 tv) You may notice thin black bars on either side of the video, as the conform to DV 16:9 isn’t perfect, but these margins get lost to overscan/processing most of the time on the tv.

My suggestion is that you preemptively sharpen your video, as down converting always softens details.
