I’m trying to simulate film unreeling from a projection reel, whilst the reel is rolling along the ground, possibly bouncing a bit.

I considered using a tracer and making a dynamic spline out of it but I couldn’t make it dynamically move properly as it was being created.

My other idea was to use a sweeped helix to build the film, make it editable and turn it into cloth. Using a cloth belt and cloth colliders, I thought I could have it behave in a natural physical way. Problem is I just can’t get it to behave at all the right way.

The problem as I see it is I need to have a growing spline that represent the film as it unrolls from the reel. And I can’t have a growing spline that will react with dynamics in a convincing way.

Thanks for any approaches that might work. Might be best to cheat it in some way.

I’ve never tried attaching a tracer to an object so this idea might have one more step than is needed.
Can you have the reel drop objects (with rigid dynamics) tags as it rolls and then have particles use the position information from each object and then assign the tracer to those particles? Then in a second grouping drop objects linked to particles generating traces )same as before) but use those “splines” as warping splines in a deformer applied to the first tracer spline?
If that doesn’t work or is too hair-brained, what about looking for a “string” tutorial. This problem seems to be a chaining issue so the string tutorials usually use chain physics. And really that’s all cloth engines are so you aren’t far wrong thinking that way.

    Hi Steve.

I couldn’t work out how to trace between a chain of particles dropped from an emitter but I moved on to the spline dynamics and fairly quickly it’s working well. It’s a helix spline with a hair constraint that is following the reel. There are hair colliders on the reel and the floor plane. The helix is sweeped with a very narrow rectangle. I had to crank up the steps in the spline dynamics to stop it falling through the reel and change the spline to B spline to keep it smooth.

Needs a bit of finesse and tweaking of dynamic settings but it’s going to work so thanks for your response.
