film shot 60i but need to make it 24p, with lots of AE work need.
HI how are you. I am working on a short film. I shot most of the footage 60i, I need to convert it to 24p. I will be using magic bullet frames plus. My Question is about the work flow for this project. I will be editing in final cut pro. Doing most of the special effects in after effects except wire removal witch I find Commotion 4.1 to be the best program for that as it come with the wire erase tool. I will finish the clean up in after effects buy using mask and any other trick I can use.
So I need to know what do I do first. Should I edit the project in 60i and then here is here I am not sure. I want to do the color correction in apples color as I know that program and I had good results form it. But at what point do I do the color correction. Do I color correct it at 60i or after when its 24p. But if it’s after then It makes color correcting in color just a bit harder and you have to slice up the clip again in final cut pro then to color. Okay I am feeling I am maybe confusing people with all the possible ways to do this.
1. I need some Direction could you please pass on any work flows. The key points is that I have lots of effects to do so do I do them when the footage is 60i or wait until I convert to 24p.
2.Should I edit the project then convert or should i convert the clips apart and re import into fcp. I am nervous that will take for ever.
3. Then At what point do I do color corrections.
I recently did a 30 second spot for the Doritos crash the super bowl contest. I shot it most of the footage with the HVX 720p at 24f and I shot the last 6 seconds with my Canon HF100 at 60i. I shot 60i because I messed up and forgot to change the setting to 24p. I was not about to try and reshoot it as I did not have the time. After looking at twixtor and magic bullet frames I went with frames plus as it just seems much simpler after trying both trial versions. Here is the link to the commercial.

My short film will be much the same just longer. So as you can see lots of post work. Lots of different plugins in both after effects and in final cut studio.

Magic bullet makes it very easy to decide the right way to do it. If you color correct b4 frames plus, frames will freak out and not deinterlace very well. Keep in mind it uses fuzzy math with original colors to know what to do. You can create a sub comp with both plugins and have one selected in each comp and do a screenshot to compare. You’ll be surprised at the results of doing things in the right order. Also, green-screening is same rule. Key b4 you deinterlace.

The good news is, if you just want to white balance all the cuts together and just use a gentle master gain control on the clips, they won’t be damaged for frames plus. Overall color tints will likely ruin its deinterlacing quality because it won’t “see” where the edges are. Use MB Looks or a final “look” as a final step. Good luck to you.
