Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Film production question

I’m a Vegas Movie Studio 10 user and it’s the NLE I plan to use to edit my production. That said, I’m not sure if it’s OK to post this in this forum, so forgive me if I’m in the wrong area (moderator, please move the thread to the relative forum if it’s inappropriate here).

I’m doing a low budget music video, and as such I am using a consumer Sony HD camcorder for the filming that has very little control (it does manual spot focus or auto, that’s pretty much it – no white balance control, f-stop, etc). I can attach small lens attachments for minor enhancement (I have a wide angle lens attachment), but aside from the optical 10X zoom, that’s as far as it will go.

Now the question: I’m trying to figure out how to film in low light (the dark actually) and obtain that look where your subject is light up and in focus, but the background and everything around it is in total darkness. How does one achieve this effect in filming (not in your NLE’s effects)?

    Any advice is appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Dylan

You need to do some experimenting (actually a lot) with various types of lights to learn how to light only your subject while everything around him/her is dark.
After all, experience is the best teacher.
Do a search and post this question in the Lighting Design Pros forum here on Creative Cow where I’m sure you’ll get more a lot more answers.

Good luck with your project Dylan.
Lighting is one of the hardest things to learn so don’t get frustrated when it doesn’t turn out exactly how you had hoped, especially given the limitations of your camera.

Try using a rented theater. I can get my local theater when it’s not in use for cheap.they have lights setup to do just what you want, and staff that mows how to do it.
