I’ve heard on numerous occasions that the best user settings on a DSLR (I’m using the 7D) are sharpness all the way down, less saturation (a couple notches) and contrast all the way down too. If I use these settings and try to add them in post (Sony Vegas Pro) it looks nothing like the beautiful original standard settings that the camera shoots. Even if I add sharpness, contrast and color all in post. I can’t seem to get it back as good, let alone to increase the picture quality.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or am I missing something here?

Perhaps you need to move up to a more robust color grading solution. Vegas is stronger as an editor and not a true grading/finishing tool. That would be better done in something like Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Smoke, Speedgrade, Magic Bullet Looks etc.

I tend to agree. We just finished a feature we shot on the T2i and the editor is a die-hard Vegas user. She’s having loads of issues with the footage and grading for color – I drop the same footage into FCP (not even Color) and I have no issues. She doesn’t have AE or Mac, tho… what to do? Looks like I may be doing the editing…

Also, isn’t Vegas one of the apps were you can edit the H264 natively. If you are grading H264 it will fall apart fast. If you are shooting flat, you have to plan on full on grading. If you are planning full on grading you need to be using an modern video editing codec. Not sure the answer as to what codec to use. For FCP we are using ProRes and AVID has there codec.

Try using Cineform’s Neo Player (https://estore.cineform.com/neoplayer.aspx) for windows. This basically just gives you the codec to transcode the H.264 footage from the 7D to Cineform (use MPEG Streamclip – https://www.squared5.com/) I think. I don’t know what would be comparable to Compressor on PC other than MPEG streamclip.

Actually I am using the cineform software to transform the codec and files to AVI. I wouldn’t try to edit natively at this point. I might look into Bulletproof looks as I believe there’s a Vegas version now.
