Film Look setups
Hello,
I am hoping a few experienced flimmakers will post their favorite camera settings for achieving a film look. I know there is no magic answer, and settings need to change based on lighting, etc., but a few guidelines (maybe indoor and outdoor general choices) will make good baselines for someone like me to experiment with.
I’m thinking about settings like detail, v detail, gain, gamma, knee, matrix, chroma, skin tone, etc.

I suggest keeping things pretty close to zero on most settings. If you correct too far in any one direction your hands will be tied in post. Also depends more on what the final output is. For example, vdetail thick should be used for TV projects while thin should be used for projects destined for eventually output to film.

Thanks for the tip.
BTW, I will be experimenting with a 35mm adapter. I’ve already noticed that there is an immeditate change with settings remaining the same : the adapter takes softens edges and colors. (Of course the shallower depth of field is awesome!)
My short will go to digital projection, and the web probably as an MOV.
I will be using 24PA.

That’s an optical side effect. I would not suggest trying to overcompensate with digital sharpenening and skin detail as you’ll be adding noise and artifacting. Nonetheless a properly calibrated production monitor will be critical to shooting.
