Film->HD->DVCam->Online Work Flow
HI Guys,
I’m looking for a good article or document for my particular work flow. I think my scenerio should be common enough that it’s likely already been outlined and documented.
Here’s my situation:
Shot on 35mm transfered to HD at 23.97 downconverted to DVcam and eventually onlined on HD.
It’s being dig’d in a 23.97p 35mm 4 perf project (I hope this is correct. Deluxe said it’s the way to go.)
Deluxe provides ALE’s and it is dig’d.
I’d like to know what and how should I provide info (ie. edl’s, project, omf’s) to the online facility to make sure everything happens the way it should.
Also, should I be working in a 24fps timeline?
Also, should I make 24fps edl’s or do I just give the online editor the project with the sequence in a bin and then the online editor will work it out?
Any advice or former posts would be greatly appreciated.

You should be in a 23.976 NTSC project and timeline. With the ALE’s and all, the process is pretty straightforward as far as editorial is concerned. The Avid User Guides actually have a lot of description in this area with workflow, etc. You might want to make sure it is a film project to match the gauge of the format should you ever need to create a pull list for a re-transfer. Better to be prepared for it than the additional work later. It is easy enough to hit one button at first to make this happen.
Once the picture is locked; the facility will most likely ask you what to hand over. The most basic is a 24 frame EDL in a CMX3600 format. But if they are using an Avid product like Symphony, then just giving them the bin with the sequence will do. If finishing on an Avid DS, then an AFE would be the way to go.
Since you are working in SD, you will most likely want to modify your sequence to 1080p/23.976 for all AAF, and AFE beforehand. Right click on sequence for “modify” and change format. Open sequence in a 1080p/23.976 project and do all your outputs.
